影片根据山崎丰子的同名长篇小说改编摄制。 日本关西地区的财阀万俵大介是阪神银行的总经理，他为了使自己从关西的财阀一跃而为全日本的财阀，不惜耍尽资产阶级的一切权术拉拢大藏省大臣，在银行进行勾结、倾轧，把比阪神银行实力雄厚的大同银行挤垮、吞掉。为了满足他贪婪的野心，大介利用儿女婚姻拉裙带关系，甚至逼死自己的儿子。他是一个利欲熏心的垄断资本家的典型。介的长子铁平是阪神银行投资的阪神特种钢公司的负责人，他想把祖父创建的这个公司办成一个生产上更完善的企业，结果反而落进了他父亲设下的圈套。最后公司破产，并且连累了积极支持他的好友——大同银行的总经理三云，铁平感到愧对好友。外，大介一直认为铁平是他父亲和他妻子生的孩子，因此非常憎恨铁平，铁平为此也很苦恼。在事业失败、家庭生活痛苦的双重逼迫下，铁平终于自杀了。高须相子表面上是万俵家的家庭教师兼总管，而实际上是大介的情妇，她不仅把持着万俵家的一切大权，欺压大介的妻子，还利用大介子女的婚姻到处拉关系，是大介在事业上搞阴谋诡计的一个得力帮手，但最后当大介感到他们的关系威胁到自己的社会地位时，就把她一脚踢开了。大介的次女二子是个正派的年轻人。她不肯象她的哥哥姐姐那样把自己的婚姻作为父亲向上爬的阶梯。为了自己的幸福，她离家出走了。在影片反映官场、银行界生活的很多场戏里，出现了永田、春田、美马、绵贯、小岛等形形色色的人物，通过他们勾画出资产阶级社会中尔虞我诈的丑恶嘴脸和阴险勾当。最终，大介把大同银行吞并了，他为成立新的东洋银行而设宴庆贺。正当他得意之际，殊不知永田、美马等人准备三年之内再把东洋银行吞并的阴谋早已安排停当了。影片通过日本几家大银行的合并，描写了资本家之间的勾心斗角，以及政界和经界相互倾轧、相互勾结的诡诈行径，一定程度上揭示了资本主义社会人与人之间的关系就是赤裸裸的金钱关系。
